Pheidole sp

This ninth species of Pheidole (09) ant collected by me is a typical small species with the minor workers just over 2 millimeters. The soldiers of this particular species has a formidable squarish appearing head. But what is unusual about this species of small Pheidole ants is that the first thoracic segment have upward and forward pointing spines (thorns). In the majors these are more like shoulder horns but in the minor they are thin and pointed like needles.

Minor workers and a major worker of Pheidole sp. In some Pheidole species the soldiers have swollen and elongated gaster that are food store. In species this replete expression is not as pronounced as in others where the gaster is extended to over four times its empty state.
